Hello! It’s time to declutter your closet for 2018!
New Year, New Clothes!
The New Year is all about saying goodbye to the old and getting excited about the new. It’s the ideal time to declutter your life, and organising your closet is a great place to start. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide on how to declutter your closet for 2018.
Evacuate the premises
The only real way to sort through your clothes, and ultimately streamline your closet, is to empty it first. Place everything on the floor or bed and give yourself a chance to actually see what you’ve got in there. If you’ve got other pieces of clothing around the house this is a good time to gather those up too, so that you can do a full sort. This could get quite messy, but the end result will be more than worth it.
DMQs (Deep meaningful questions)
Pick each piece up, and ask yourself some key questions:
- Is it in good condition?
- Does it still fit?
- Do I still wear this?
- Does it make me happy?
Depending on what you decide, you can make three piles:
- Definitely keep
- No longer need
It’s now time to be ruthless; there’s little point in decluttering if you end up with pretty much the same amount as what you started with!
Work through the “maybe” pile
Systematically go through each piece again, and ask the same questions. Try them all on to see how they fit and how they make you feel. Play some music and just have a little bit of fun while you’re at it! Set yourself a goal to at least halve the pile and you’ll soon get an instinct for which pieces you really can’t say goodbye to and which ones you can let go.
You might find that you’ve got items of clothing that you still love, but they’ve got that one annoying stain on them! This doesn’t have to result in you throwing that item away. The internet is the digital encyclopedia of all things, so simply find a way to sort that stain. I speak from experience, as I was clumsy enough to get bleach on a top I really love while I went on a pre-new year cleaning frenzy. It’s a reversible mistake (phew!), and if you ever have the same issue, just click here for bleach stain removal tips. Sorted!
Now that you’ve got your full “keep” pile, think about the essential pieces you have. These are the pieces that really go with your style and get the most wear. Set them to the side, and if you’ve got the space, think about storing them in their own closet or section. Need some inspo on how to define your style? Then read this.
‘Tis the season
I hate going through my wardrobe in summer looking for a cami top, but having all my space obstructed by big jumpers. But you can avoid this and clear some space in your closet by storing seasonal clothing elsewhere and swapping them out as the seasons change. Whether it’s a light dress that won’t see the light of day in winter or a chunky piece of knitwear that you’re not going to wear in the summer sun, just pack them away somewhere safe.
The fun bit: categorising
Whether you prefer to categorise by clothing type, colour, complete outfits, or some other way, now is the time to organise your collection. Think about the best way to store your clothes, shoes, bags, and other accessories before you put them back in. That way it will be much easier to find what you’re looking for each day.
Now that your closet has been stocked up with the pieces you’re keeping, it’s time to say goodbye to the other pile. If they’re in good enough condition, donating is a great idea. You’ll feel good knowing that they are not going to waste. But If you think there are pieces worth selling, then go ahead; put them online and make some extra money for the new year!
We’ve looked at how to decide what to keep, categorising your pieces and even how to save stained clothes by using bleach stain removal.
